Guirish Solanki

Mr. Guirish Solanki is a Consultant Paediatric Neurosurgeon at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Birmingham. He is also an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in the School of Clinical & Experimental Medicine, University of Birmingham. 


He is active in research and currently involved in national and international clinical trials including hydrocephalus and metabolic disorders. He has a particular interest in spinal involvement in in Skeletal dysplasias specially Achondroplasia and Mucopolysaccharidosis. He provides Intra-thecal therapy for metabolic disorders such as MPS II and Nieman-Pick C disease. His other interests include surgery for brain and spinal tumours, cranio-cervical junction and foramen magnum disorders and syringomyelia, congenital dysraphic spines, hydrocephalus and endoscopy. 

Mr Solanki has worked with colleagues to develop guidelines, review surveillance programmes and chaired advisory boards for mucopolysaccharidosis and regularly participates in expert meetings in skeletal dysplasias. 

He is a keen educator, involved in national and international training. He is the West Midlands Neurosurgery Training Programme Director and Chair of the Specialty Training Committee in Neurosurgery. Mr Solanki is also faculty for the European Society of Paediatric Neurosurgery (ESPN), International Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery (ISPN), the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies(WFNS), providing teaching in Europe but also to areas such as Latin America, India, China, Taiwan, North, West and South Africa. 

He is a past European Neurosurgery Chair of SIOP-Brain Tumour Group (2010-2014) and Chair of Training & Education Group of SIOP-Europe Brain Tumour Group since 2012. He is also Chair of the Liaison Committee of the ISPN. 

He has published within the area of Spinal Surgery, Metabolic disorders, Neuro-oncology, Craniofacial surgery and Paediatric Neurosurgery with over 50 papers cited over 1700 times.
